FRISCO, Texas – Central Arkansas’ Markus Schweikert and Northwestern State’s Ceasar Stephens are the Men’s Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. All Southland Athletes of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.Schweikert’s honor marks his first of the season and the first overall for the Central Arkansas men’s track & field team. The senior set a school record at the SIU Don DeNoon Invitational in Carbondale, Ill. Northwestern State’s Stephens was awarded the weekly honor after winning the triple jump event at the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational.Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Markus Schweikert, Central Arkansas – Sr. – Spay, GermanySchweikert broke the Central Arkansas school record in the 3,000-meter race and tabbed the Southland’s second-fastest time of the season (8:26.56). His performance in the 3k also pushed the Bears to a fourth-place team finish in a 10-team field at the SIU Don DeNoon Invitational.Honorable Mention: Chris Jefferson, Sam Houston State; Jamal January, Abilene Christian; Tyler Smith, McNeese.Men’s Field Athlete of the Week – Ceasar Stephens, Northwestern State – Sr. – Opelika, Ala.Stephens’ jump was the Southland’s second best of the season and marked his second first-place finish of the year in the triple jump event. The senior recorded a final jump of 50’ 9 ½” at the Bayou Bengal Invitational.Honorable Mention: Kai Schmidt, Abilene Christian; Lentz Similien, McNeese.Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
