Dear EditorThe Government has the power to ensure Guyanese pay taxes, but, in return, it must ensure quality services are delivered to the Guyanese people.Definitely, this is not the policy of this APNU/AFC coalition Government. Recently, Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence visited the National Ophthalmology Hospital in Region Six and announced the re-opening of this important national hospital, it was later confirmed — when the Director of Health Services announced at the April statutory Regional Democratic Council meeting — that in the next two weeks, the National Ophthalmology Hospital would be reopened for cataract surgeries to the public. This was welcome news for thousands of poor Guyanese who are awaiting cataract surgeries over two years now. Unfortunately, to date, the National Ophthalmology Hospital has been unable to commence cataract surgeries. This was confirmed when a senior Government official called the doctors, who said that only screening of patients is been carried out, not surgeries. Definitely, persons who are awaiting services from this National Ophthalmology Hospital might either become blind or may have to pay privately at an exorbitant price to get their surgeries done, all because of the incompetence of the Minister of Public Health, the Director of Health Services, and the APNU/AFC coalition Government’s incompetence to ensure that the much needed medical supplies were procured to fix this crisis. We have seen that shortages of the drugs and medical supplies continue to be a national issue, and cannot be fixed because the APNU/AFC coalition Government favour certain suppliers because of huge kickbacks.Public officials who mislead the public should be held accountable with disciplinary actions. Billions of taxpayers’ monies are being spent to ensure ministers and public officials enjoy the good life, while the poor and vulnerable continue to suffer. As a representative of the people of Region Six, I urge Guyanese to demand that this National Ophthalmology Hospital be fixed immediately to avert a national crisis.SincerelyZamal HussainChairmanRegional HealthCommitteeRegion Six
BY EMMET RUSHE: There have been a number of weight loss products that have entered the market here in the last few years. They all follow the same pattern:1. They start off by selling you their products. 2. Then they want to enlist you to sell them.3. Then they want you to get your friends to sell them also. What you end up with is a sales person who has absolutely no nutritional knowledge but who sounds like they know what they are talking about. (They read the script.)They sound as if they have the answers to your problems. (They don’t.) The reality is that all they want is your money. (They really, really do.)These types of companies pay huge amounts of money to marketing experts who know what buttons to push when it comes to your insecurities. They give you scientific claims based on biased research; most research is actually done by the companies themselves. They tell you their products will do more than they actually do, only to blame you when their products fail.If you didn’t lose weight it’s because you didn’t follow the instructions properly. Who is going to dispute this?“I can’t wait to wake up and have my plant/soy based meal replacement shake for breakfast.. Yummmmmm!”Who says this? Absolutely no one – that’s who.Who in their right mind wants to replace food with a drink that has around 120cals? That isn’t a meal. It’s barely a snack. They tell you to drink two of these shakes per day and then have one meal and that’s how you will lose weight.Really?! Yes, severe calorie restriction will lead to weight loss, but it is certainly NOT a healthy, sustainable way to do it.In the past 2 years I have been approached by all of them.I could have made a fortune from these products. I could have told you that they work and that you should sign up and take them. But I didn’t.Do you want to know why? It’s because I have integrity.I don’t need to sell overpriced, highly processed, weight loss products in order to get my clients results.Only badly educated trainers need to do that. What I do isn’t sexy or glamorous. It doesn’t have a huge marketing campaign that pushes unsustainable weight loss goals or overhyped, overpriced products. What I do takes time; it involves hard work and a bit of self-restraint and determination by my clients. There are no quick fixes when it comes to sustainable weight loss.If my clients are following my programmes to the letter and it isn’t working for them, it’s my responsibility. I’ll alter their programme to find a way to get things moving again in order for them to reach their goals, not push the blame onto them and make them feel like failures. If these companies wanted to truly help their customers, they would only hire employees who are qualified in the field of health and nutrition. But they don’t. Instead they have marketing conferences where the sales people get new scripts so they can sell more of their product. There will always be a place for these products. Firstly because there will always be people who want to do as little as possible and get the results they want – Secondly, because there are always opportunists waiting to make money.#TrainSmartFor further information on Personal Training and Nutrition you can contact me through the link below.https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rushe-Personal-Training-and-Performance/120518884715118* Emmet is the owner and operator of Rushe Personal Training and PerformanceEMMET RUSHE’S FITNESS COLUMN: THE TRUTH ABOUT ‘WEIGHT LOSS’ PRODUCTS was last modified: February 24th, 2014 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:emmet rushefitness columnhypemythstrainsmartweight loss products
