Haitian opposition parties dismiss new initiatives by Prime Minister Céant

first_imgPORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Opposition political parties have described as “small, superficial measures,” the new initiatives outlined by Prime Minister Jean-Henry Céant last weekend to end the political violence in the country aimed at removing President Jovenel Moise from office. The Democratic and Popular Sector, which groups many of the opposition parties here, said it had taken note of the address to the nation by Céant who “ignored the main demands of the Haitian people (being) …the departure of President Jovenel Moses from power”.In a 20 minute television broadcast on Saturday night, Céant said there would be a 30 per cent cut in the national budget allocation to the office of the Prime Minister and that he is also suggesting that the Presidency and the Parliament do the same.In addition, Prime Minister Céant, said there would be the abolition of all the “unnecessary privileges of senior state officials’ such as fuel costs, phone cards, travel abroad, amount of consultants on files and reconsideration of providing them with a second residence. He said that these savings will, for example, strengthen the judiciary by giving it additional resources to facilitate the completion of the Petrocaribe trial.Opposition political parties have been staging street demonstrations in support of their calls for President Moise to step down, after accusing him of not investigating allegations of corruption in the previous government over PetroCaribe, an oil alliance of many Caribbean states with Venezuela to purchase oil on conditions of preferential payment.A relative calm seemed to have returned in Haiti, after 10 days of anti-government demonstrationsSuperficial measures In its statement, the Democratic and Popular Sector said “at this crucial moment in national life, the great ills of which the Republic suffers cannot be overcome by small, superficial measures to sprinkle the depths of the misery of the Haitian people, which unequivocally rejects a system of inhuman and destructive public governance of which Jovenel Moïse is the executing arm.”It said the statements of Prime Minister Céant “constitute a denial of recognition of the dimension of the current crisis” and the refusal of Moise to step down.“The Haitian people expected the Prime Minister to suggest that President Moïse listen to his voice (and that) “the Prime Minister would have taken this opportunity to tell President Jovenel that he has no legitimacy. That he is not credible by in front of the Haitian population.”The group said that it is unbelievable that Prime Minister Céant would call for a dialogue to discuss the ongoing situation noting that even President Moïse does not believe in the process of dialogue.last_img read more

How To Avoid Red Wine Stains On Your Teeth?

first_imgPLANTATION, Florida – How do you enjoy your favorite reds without the self-consciousness associated with red wine teeth stains? Here’s the scoop on dental discoloration so you can take the right steps to maintain your pearly whites. Why Red Wine StainsStrong pigments in red wine are instant stain-makers for porous surfaces like your teeth. These pigments, called chromogens, give it that deep, intense hue, and leave their mark on your teeth after just a few sips. The nature of enamel plays a big part in this process.Enamel isn’t perfectly smooth. It has small cracks and irregularities, and pigmentation from red wine will settle in them.”The acid and tannins contained within red wine, however, are the main contributors to staining. Wine is an acidic beverage – much like coffee, tea and soda – so it promotes enamel erosion that makes it easier for chromogens to soak into your smile. Tannins, the astringent compounds that create the dry-mouth texture of wine, also bind to the teeth, encouraging pigment to latch on.This doesn’t mean you have to avoid red wine. Red wine has long been touted for its health benefits, some of which include reduced risk of gum disease and tooth decay. It also may lower your susceptibility to heart disease and offer protection against Alzheimer’s. So, before you switch to white, keep in mind there’s a lot you can do to lessen staining in the short term and ensure a white smile for life.Brush and Floss before Pouring a Glass –Stains cling to the film of plaque on your teeth, so a thorough brushing and flossing before drinking red wine is a good personal rule to uphold. By properly removing new plaque and food residue from your teeth before an indulgent meal you can minimize your chances of staining. Cleaning your teeth on this type of schedule also cuts down on your risk of tooth decay and gum disease.Rinse Your Mouth Out Afterward –To help prevent red wine from lingering on your teeth, take a swig of water, which is generally a good habit while consuming any type of alcohol to keep you hydrated. You may think it makes sense to brush the wine off your teeth, as well, but enamel is more sensitive right after a meal. You should wait at least 30 minutes before brushing to prevent this damage and let your enamel recalcify.Eat as you Drink –Consider noshing on cheese and crackers as you drink; this food can act as a barrier to the acid in red wine. Go with particularly fibrous foods that are low in sugar, such as broccoli, celery or hard cheeses – all of which can stimulate saliva flow and naturally scrub away drink stains.Use a Whitening Toothpaste –Whitening toothpastes work to remove surface stains on your teeth that naturally occur over time and prevent new red wine teeth stains from forming. It’s a good idea to use one if you’re concerned about keeping your smile bright this time of year. When the teeth are thoroughly clean, they have a better chance of picking up whitening agents effectively – so be sure not to skip your regular dental cleanings. If you want a more extensive whitening effect, of course, you may want to consider an at-home or professional treatment. Talk to your dentist before you use any non-paste whitening product, especially if you have a history of sensitive teeth or gums.As with most dental concerns, keeping your commitment to regular dental cleanings and exams can go a long way in preventing a permanent stain from an acidic drink or food you’ll want to enjoy on occasion. Do so with these tips in mind, and you won’t have to cut back on your favorite reds at such a wonderful time of the year.Dr Sharon Robinson, DDS, owns and operates the Dental Place in Plantation, Florida, with a second office – the Dental Place Cosmetix Spa in Kingston, Jamaica. The bookmaker notes the Lib Dems strong grassroots support in Richmond and the party’s recent positive performance in the Witney by-election.Furthermore, Goldsmith’s campaign may be hindered by his support of Brexit during June’s EU Referendum. As a constituency, Richmond Park voted 70% in favour of ‘Remain’, while Goldsmith had been one of the Leave campaigns highest profile figures.Betfair Exchange Political Journalist Paul Krishnamurty commented on the market“There is a danger in overstating how motivated the public are by this issue, in comparison to the Westminster Village and political activists…Just as Remain supporters were unreliable voters in June, I wonder just how motivated they will be to turn out on a cold December night for a by-election.” Sharelast_img read more

Chris Watts: Horse Racing’s biggest hurdle in tackling corruption

first_img HBLB ups prize money commitment by 50% July 31, 2020 Share Submit SBC Roundtable: A new ‘Pace’ for live cricket trading July 8, 2020 Related Articles StumbleUpon Speaking at the ESSA Sports Betting Integrity Conference at Lord’s cricket ground yesterday, Chris Watts head of integrity assurance at the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) outlined what he identified as the ‘biggest threat’ to eradicating corruption from the sport. The former anti-corruption manager for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) was speaking on the opening panel at the event, analysing what are the best practice models to tackle match-fixing and sporting corruption. He was particularly wary of betting industries in foreign markets that don’t fall under the purview of UK regulators.Watts said: “One of the biggest threats which I can see coming down the track in the next ten years, is betting operators located offshore, who are offering markets on sporting events within our jurisdiction. They’re either not licensed or are only partially licensed, they’re not regulated or are only lightly regulated, so they’re not licensed or regulated to the extent that we are used to within the UK under the Gambling Commission.“It makes it hugely problematic for us to have vision into those markets, to see what’s going on, and understand the threat and the risk to UK sport, that’s something that we know is happening with horse racing, so how do we get that visibility if we can’t get see the betting patterns how do we understand what’s going on? And how do we understand what the risk is, in order to take some action against it?”Watts, who joined the ECB after spending thirty years with the Metropolitan Police Service, then went onto point out how the BHA is ‘addressing and tackling’ the issue. Watts added: “One way we can address and tackle it is through education. In horse racing we have started an education programme; it’s in the early stages and it’s going to be a huge challenge to deliver an education awareness programme across the whole of horse racing.“We are talking here about upwards of around 600 licensed jockeys, around about 600 trainers and the same number of racing yards, this is going to be a huge project, it’s something that we’ve just started on now and we’re planning and scheduling it with a view to delivering it over a two year programme.” Kenneth Alexander: Industry’s regulatory future is in-play as live sport resumes June 15, 2020 Sharelast_img read more
